My journey through the wine world has taken me from formal studies to global vineyards and from restaurant ownership to inventing experiences that bring wine to life in entirely new ways.

Here is my story:
It all started when I tasted my first red Burgundy in 1984 while taking what was to be my first of many formal wine tasting courses. I remember saying “This tastes like velvet.” And so began my 40+ year wine odyssey of wine collecting, learning, tasting, teaching and sharing wine.
Whether tasting in the cellars of Burgundy, climbing vineyards in Germany, standing on the ancient soils of Italy and Spain, and visiting other wine regions across France, Austria, New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, Chile, and the United States, my passion for wine and desire to learn, share and teach were always at the forefront.
Over the years, I’ve owned and operated the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence–winning Cuvée Ray Wine Bar and Restaurant, as well as a “virtual winery” that produced wines under my Social Cluster label. Through every endeavor, one goal has stayed at the heart of it all: Connecting Wine with Wine Lovers—through education, exploration, and experiences that bring people together, one glass at a time.
Somewhere along that journey, I stumbled upon something unexpected: music and wine can be paired much like food and wine. That discovery led me to create Vintunes®, a patented, one-of-a-kind tasting experience that blends sound and flavor into harmony.
The most recent chapter of my wine journey was pursuing rigorous wine education, eventually earning my WSET Level 4 Diploma from the prestigious London based Wine and Spirit Educational Trust, the highest qualification awarded by them; along with my USSA Sommelier Certification, Certified Specialist of Wine designation, and credentials as a Certified WSET Wine Instructor, teaching through Philly Wine as well as my own Cuvée Ray Wine Lovers Academy, now part of Cuvée Ray Uncorked.

Cuvée Ray Uncorked grew from the simple belief that wine education shouldn’t feel intimidating — it should feel alive. What began as a wine academy has become a community for curious wine lovers who want to learn through experience, fun tastings, and connection.
This isn’t about memorizing tasting notes or chasing scores. It’s about having great wine experiences and getting to know wine through those experiences.

Finding Wines that Overdeliver on Value
After tasting thousands and thousands of wines over the last 40 years, I became obsessed with understanding WHY people enjoy some wines more than others and most importantly what is it that makes some wines outstanding values
I also became focused on the fact that most wine rating systems do not go to the heart of what CONSUMERS are focused on
So, after really digging in to tasting exercises on my way to receiving my WSET Level 4 Diploma in wine, I set out to develop a new way to identify wines that overdeliver on value and identify what is it that makes them so good from the wine CONSUMER perspective…enter CUVÉE RAY VALUE CERTIFIED

Cuvée Ray Value Certified is a new, first of its kind VALUE FOCUSED/CONSUMER FOCUSED/CONSUMER ENGAGED drinkability certification that considers the two components of VALUE…Price and Quality.
Think of it as a value focused “Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval” for wine.
No ratings (no, “Oh no, I can’t buy this wine because it only got an 89 not 90”), no BS wine descriptions…nothing like that.
Rather, a simple YES for wines that overdeliver based on the all-important “bang for the buck” principle using the CUVÉE RAY VALUE wine certification system.

FIRST, a candidate wine must excel in at least one of the following CUVÉE RAY VALUE attributes all of which go to the question of WHY consumers would love this wine:
Depth – Does the wine have a richness to it that implies a sort of 3- dimensional rather than 2-dimensional feel to it. Think of one instrument in an orchestra playing a single note. Now think of the whole orchestra playing that note. That is depth.
Intrigue – An unexpected pleasant aspect of a wine or complexity that captures your attention and make you perhaps do a double take and say…huh
Finish – How long the good taste of the wine lingers in your mouth… a long-standing hallmark of quality
Freshness - Is the wine really alive and refreshing
Smoothness – Do all the pieces of the wine fit together; is it well balanced
THEN, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, if a candidate wine excels in one or more CUVÉE RAY VALUE attributes, in order to receive a CUVÉE RAY VALUE CERTIFICATION, the wine must then answer the all-important question, “Does This Wine Overdeliver for the Price”
“Overdeliver for the price” DOESN’T necessarily mean cheap but more expensive wines would be expected to excel in more than one CUVÉE RAY VALUE criteria and/or be out of this world crazy good in a single criteria, as it is the “bang for the buck” that counts.
